Lion King stuffs :)
Mostly a post for kijani_lion - I was just at WalMart and they have a whole new bunch of Lion King toys there! The action figures look a lot like the ones sold back when the movie first came out but they do have these cute new fuzzy little figures that I considered getting ^_^

Big gallery update... and tails can be educational!
Been a while since I've updated my gallery on FA so I did that last weekend with my best 7 photos I've gotten recently, here's a sample (click on the picture to be able to full-view the higher-res version)

"The Lion that thought he was a Dog"

"In the Distance"

"Look Out Below!"

And finally what I think is my best capture so far this year...

"In Love with a Log"

I've been making it out to the zoo a few times every month and I almost always wear my lion tail along too, and while it usually just provides a few surprised faces and lots of smiles, last Friday it was also the subject of quite an educational opportunity for a youngster.

Sad because the lions were off-exhibit (it was too cold apparently) I was shooting away in the Tropical Rainforest's free-range bird exhibit when I heard a family walk in and the mom, standing behind me, said,

"Hey Cooper, look! What animal is that?"

Being that there were only BIRDS here I knew immediately what she was referring to ;)

Cooper, about 4 years old: "Thats a... thats a TIGURRR!"

Mom: "No, Coop, remember that Tiger we saw, he had stripes on his tail. Lions have an extra piece of dark fur at the end of their tails like he does, so I think that's a lion! Lions don't have stripes"

Cooper: "Wow, Cooool!" (I feel something lightly tug on my appendage)

Mom: "Cooper, don't touch! Do you think lions like to have their tails pulled?"

Lion video, and I won the photo contest! :D
I just earned my first photography award ever... I was officially named the winner of the first-annual Woodland Park Zoo Calendar Cover Photo Contest, with my photo "Leonine Lovers" garnering 398 votes during the four day voting period on the zoo's Facebook site.  About 160 photos were submitted for this contest before they made a cut to the top 10 for the final voting. The next highest photo in the finals had 328 votes.

I will get my photo on the cover of about 40,000 calendars that will be shipped to zoo members this November, a gift card to the Zoo Store and a deluxe membership so i can take up to three people with me for free!  Yaaay!

There were a number of awesome photos that made the final 10 and I feel very fortunate and honored to have won this!

To celebrate, I've made another compilation video of the beautiful lions from Seattle's Award-winning Woodland Park Zoo, Hubert and Kalisa, this time set to music (yes, drowns out the annoying kids).  Includes a photo set of my best shots taken in the last year at the end.  Enjoy!

Help the Big Cats
Seen on silverjames's journal:

"Hey LJ folks. Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida needs our help! One of their folks, Chris, has applied to host an episode of Oprah, highlighting the plight of the cats they rescue and rehabilitate. He's in desperate need of votes. Some interior design guy has like 75,000 votes. Do we really need another episode of where to put our couches? Please click on the link: http://bit.ly/bsVWhE Vote for Chris and the cats and spread the word. Let's do something good for the critters!"

I've actually been to Big Cat Rescue, and it's very nice, but like all animal rehab places, it could use more help and attention to its cause. This could help them out a lot. (I'm posting this in a few places so sorry if anyone sees it a bunch of times)

Kijani's Photo Caption Contest - Results and Final Week!
Two weeks have gone by, and it's time for... yes... the FINAL installment of the caption contest - week 8.

Yes, I know... but it's been fun and we have a great final session planned that everyone will love. First things first, let's take a look at last week's picture and pick a winner!

A general theme of laziness and "bossitude" for our male lion here was common among all entries, and while all of them were great... we thought that

and his (at least I think it's a "his," if I'm wrong correct me Wappa) response:

Hubert: "Honey, while you are up, get me a sandwich."

Kalisa: *grumbles*

took the cake! This is soooo reminiscent of the fat, lazy American dad plopped down on the couch in front of the TV yelling at his wife... "hey while you're in the kitchen... grab me (insert food item here)"

So no new winner this week since Wappa's already in the final drawing, but for the final week we'll have DOUBLE the chances, that's right, we'll have two pictures instead of one for you to submit your clever captions to.

The first one is our traditional lion shot...

And it's a painful one, these are the two geriatric (as in, super-old) lions again, Jake and Juanita, and Jake seems to have taken a liking to nomming on Juanita's ear and she winces, obviously in pain. What the heck could be going on here?

And the second one is actually NOT lions for once, but a pair of cute Snow Leopard cubs only about 6 months old at the time of this picture!

Their names are Batu (on the left) and Gobi. Here, Gobi is fiercely protecting the pumpkin treat that the two of them got for Halloween, and Batu is feeling the wrath of his (selfish) brother.

For both entries, I'd prefer lines for both animals.

Allrighty, this is it, so let's go out with a bang and a LOT of responses and good luck to everyone! After this session is tabulated, we'll do the grand prize drawing so we know who wins the 8.5x11 print of their favorite contest Photo.

Have fun!

Kijani's Photo Caption Contest - Results and Week 7
Wow this might have been the toughest judging period of the whole contest, with SO MANY great responses to this photo as I expected!

And we for the first time have co-winners this week!

For his entry:

Hubert: "Ow ow ow ow! With the grain, with the grain!"

and also...

Hubert: "Hey, Kalisa, not in front of the kids!"

Kalisa: "Oh.... Sorry.." :p

Revo's is funny and cute at the same time, and we ALL know how rough lions' tongues can be, like coarse sandpaper!  I can totally picture him muttering that in that scene.

And *APPLAUSE* for lyonlover (aka Kiwa) for the clever TLK reference!!! It fits great with this photo and there were some kids in attendance at this moment!

And neither of them have won so far so they're both entered into the grand prize drawing!  Congratulations you two, and seriously great job for everyone else, they were all great and it was so hard to narrow it down this time.

So I've decided to run this for TWO more sessions, so here's the next to last photo in the caption contest!

In this capture we can see the roles are reversed as we have a lazy Hubert laid out on the rock ready for a snooze and Kalisa patrolling the territory.

This time it's pretty open, I'd like submissions to have either thought bubbles or spoken responses from both lions though.  So you can either have Kalisa thinking and Hubert saying something, Kalisa expressing her disgust and Hubert with a thought bubble, etc.

Go after it and have fun!

Kijani's Photo Caption Contest - Results and Week 6
Hey!  First off I'm really sorry about the long layoff, and it's about time we got this started back up again!  We'll run it for at least a few more sessions before drawing the grand prize winner.

So here was the last picture...

And the tribe has spoken...

The winner is:

For his entry:

Juanita: "Is that perfume I smell???"
Jake: "Uhh...naw!"

Juanita definitely has that bug-eyed look that something really just caught her attention and her mate stealing her feminine scent would be just the thing to do it.

Great responses though from everyone, and I KNOW you're all gonna love this next one as it's probably the most captionable pic I've ever taken

Here Kalisa gives Hubert a nice long lick along his back, but he gives a very human-like lip snarl as he appears to say something to her about this public display of affection.

What is Hubert saying?

I'll try to keep this session at two weeks this time ;)

Have fun and get creative!

Kijani's Photo Caption Contest - Results and Week 5
Hey everyone sorry for the delay - I'll be running the Photo Caption Contest every 2 weeks from now on - partly so we don't run out of pictures, and also partly due that the interest has fallen off a bit since the early weeks

Anyway here was week 4's pic:

And although there weren't that many responses just about all of them we received were REALLY good and clever... but I still think we need to pick...

King Simba

For her submission:

Kalisa: "You really are the lyin' king, aren't you?"
Hubert: "What can I say? It's a lion's prerogative.

Very punny!

KS will be entered into the grand prize drawing... and let's see what kinda stuff you guys come with for THIS beauty:

Haha yes, these are the two old lions again, Jake and Juanita, and Juanita catches a glimpse right up Jake's nostrils and gets all bug-eyed while he seems to be saying something.

What is Jake saying, and either include a response or "thought bubble" for Juanita as well.

Have at it!

Kijani's Photo Caption Contest - Results and Week 4
It's Sunday again???

Okay let's see who emerged as this week's winner... quite a variety of responses this time from Tiger Woods references to leaving cubs unattended...

Juanita: "YOU took the last cookie! And don't say you didn't!"

Jake: *cringes*

At these lions' old age it doesn't take much to set them off, and we could totally see Juanita flipping out over the littlest thing, like a hungry lion nabbing the last cookie and trying to hide it :)  And as you know, lions LOVE cookies!

Congrats Wappa, and you're now entered into the grand prize drawing as well.

And here's Week 4!

These are the two new lions again, Kalisa and Hubert - here we have a very lazy Hubert laying down for a catnap and Kalisa looking down on him with an expression of disgust and/or irritation.

For this week, please include lines for BOTH lions (thought bubble for Hubert is okay), but what is Kalisa saying and how does Hubert respond?

Kijani's Photo Caption Contest - Results and Week 3
Happy Sunday Everyone!

Another great turnout for Week 2 with 15 responses to choose from in total, and there were so many great ones this time!  So... I'm sure everyone's anxious to hear the winner for last week's pic:

And the one that stood out the most amongst our staff was:

*opens envelope*

"Kalisa: No, this is not the ice cream stand. That map you're holding is 5 years old!"

We thought this was extremely clever because at Woodland Park Zoo the ice cream stands tend to change places a lot and are generally hard to find, but of course all little kids want when they go to the zoo is the ice cream (much to the chagrin of their parents!)  And zoos usually don't change their layout often so the maps aren't regularly updated, and WPZ's is no exception!  That map is literally five years old.

Great job Wolfbaine, and you are now entered along with Khalfani in the grand prize drawing for the 8x10 print of your choice.

Now onto Week 3, probably the best "action" photo I've ever gotten, it was all happening so fast I was shocked the picture turned out!  These are the older lions that have now been moved off-exhibit into quarantine, their names are Juanita and Jake.

So clearly Juanita and Jake have been in a scuffle and Juanita is visibly upset about something and getting all up in Jake's face about it!

What is she upset about?

For this entry please include at least Juanita's line and enter an optional response or thought bubble for Jake if you wish.

Entries accepted from now until midnight next Saturday.  Good luck and have fun with this one!

Kijani's Photo Caption Contest - Results and Week 2
Happy Sunday... and it's time once again for Kijani's Lion Photo Caption Contest!

Wow, what a fantastic response for the first week!  In all there were 18... that's right, count 'em EIGHTEEN total submissions.

This made our judges' job especially difficult, as you could imagine there were a number of great responses that made our panel smile and LOL on first read but in the end we had to pick just one...

and without further ado the winner is.......

For his entry:

Kalisa: "Ooooh Edward!"
Hubert: "Edward!? Who's Edward!?"

Again this was a very, very tough call but our staff chose this one because it was a play on the horror of mistakenly calling out a former lover's name in the heat of the moment.  Here Hubert is clearly trying to get Kalisa "in the mood" with a lick on the nape... and what a mood-killer ;)

I think Hubert will have some words with Kalisa over dinner after that one!

Congratulations Khalfani, you are now entered into the grand prize drawing.  Please keep participating in the contest though!  Should you (or any former winner) win again, the entry will go to the staff's second pick.

Also receiving high votes from our staff were following entries:

NAME:  Leonedar
Kalisa: "Watch the sunburn!!!"

NAME:  Leorgathar
Kalisa: No! no no no! You're doing it WRONG!!!
Hubert: *Sigh*.... women -.-

NAME:  Fendi
Kalisa: You lick me like you're licking some other lion Hubert.
Hubert: I am not Tiger Woods!

And here is Week 2's pic!

A really adorable shot of Kalisa staring straight into the eyes of a little girl, no more than six years old.  Here only one "line" is needed, what is Kalisa thinking as she looks at the girl?  Does she understand the situation or is she just hungry? :)

Week 2 entries accepted from NOW until 11:59pm on Saturday night.  Good luck!

Kijani's Photo Caption Contest!
Heyaz my fellow leonids,

Starting every Sunday I thought of doing something fun - I'll be posting a funny lion photograph I took and your job will be to post a funny, witty or otherwise clever caption for one, or both, animals. I will be as specific as possible about what you need to caption in the instructions under the photograph. What are they saying?

After a week passes our crack staff here at the Photo Caption Contest will judge all entries and pick the best one for the week (announced at the same time the new photo goes up), with weekly winners entered into a grand prize drawing to receive a professionally printed 8.5x11 photo of any one of your favorite shots from the contest mailed to you for free!

But this was meant to be for fun in the first place so don't take it too seriously ;) and have fun getting into these animals' heads!  I can't wait to see what sort of hilarity your creative minds will come up with!

Week 1 - Jan. 17, 2010

Hubert gives his mate Kalisa a friendly lick on the neck that she seems to enjoy VERY much.  What is Kalisa saying as she roars in delight? And feel free to add a "thought bubble" for Hubert if you want (what he's thinking) but this isn't required.

Oh... and this contest will also be running through a Lion King forum and also the lion_furs group so all entries will be combined for judging.

I've had a nice run of photo sessions the last few trips to the zoo and been fortunate to get a number of priceless lion shots which I've updated on my FA gallery.  Here's a sneak peek:

"One Very Bored Lion"

"A Little Lion Foreplay"

"Face-to-Face with a Lioness"

And one of my all-time favorites...

This last shot is a great example of why I love Seattle's Award-winning Woodland Park Zoo, and the lion exhibit in particular.

Not only is it an enormous space, but guests have the opportunity to get literally two feet away from these amazing animals.

Here, beautiful nine-year-old South African lioness Kalisa stares directly at a young girl, no more than five or six years old, who is just standing there in awe. I absolutely love the look on Kalisa's face, her expression seems to be one of compassion and understanding, as if she somehow knows she is looking at a small and defenseless human.

This girl will remember that moment for the rest of her life!

Also featured in this update besides lions are otters and a cute ocelot kitten - Check out my FA photography gallery here!

And just as an FYI I'm selling professional prints (8.5 x 11) of any of the art in my gallery for just $10 including shipping so if you're interested just drop me a line :)

Enjoy the majesty of the most magnificent animal on earth!

The Lion (and Dragon's) Den - A Furry Home Tour!
Finally got around to shooting this video of my new place! Just to give you an idea it's about the size of putting my two previous apartments' square footage combined. It's a "rambler" style manufactured home, 3-bed, 2-bath and like 2.5 living rooms. Srsly.

I never bothered to count the number of lions in this house, but it's got to be over 1,000... truly a "Lion's Den." In other words, this house is what happens when a lion and Lion King lover's eBay obsession gets *a little bit* out of hand! Hehe.

Unfortunately my lion roommate Ithabise and I had to part ways but I picked up two new mates, Da'alrakken and Dolphin Echo, who just got out of the Navy. Ironically they're both dragons, and both full of AWESOME (not to mention responsible and mature) and everything's been going really well so far.

Enjoy this little glimpse into the lion's life and I look forward to hearing your comments about our new dwelling!

FA Gallery update!
I'm in the process of uploading some of my best (recent) photos to my FurAffinity gallery and have posted quite a few already.

Here's just a sampling of some of the new shots... the first one came out amazing and is probably in my top 3 photos of all time... I love his "dreamy" look and I wonder what was going through his mind when I snapped the shot! It's kinda like he's in his own little world :) This lion's name is Hubert and he's been living at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, WA for about a year and half now, he's a South African (Panthera leo krugeri) purebred lion originally from the Nashville Zoo.

He usually goes out of his way to avoid eye contact with humans so I thought this was highly unusual but I visit so often I know they do recognize me - especially the lioness, Kalisa.

I hope you guys enjoy the photos of these amazing animals and to check out more (I'll be posting more tonight) click my gallery link at the top of the page.
